"Barra" is a term that defines alluvial deposits formed at the mouth of rivers and canals. In the case of Barra da Tijuca, the deposit is formed by the meeting of the waters of the set of lakes in the region, including Lagoa da Tijuca, with the Atlantic Ocean, through the Joatinga Channel.

 

"Tijuca" is a term of ancient Tupi origin that means "rotten water", "pond", "swamp",

From Avenida Ayrton Senna, the beach does not have a boardwalk, as it is an area of environmental preservation.

 

It has strong waves, tubular and very good for surfing and bodyboarding. Several stages of Brazilian and even world championships are held there.

On its edge, it is very common to find people practicing sports, such as beach soccer, footvolley, volleyball, racquetball, slackline, even taking walks on the boardwalk or riding a bicycle along the bike path.

The main sports practiced in the sea at Barra da Tijuca beach are shore fishing, kitesurfing, bodyboarding, windsurfing, surfing and Stand up Paddle, and it is also the stage for many championships.

Barra da Tijuca beach is the main beach in the region and stretches along Avenida Lúcio Costa to Recreio dos Bandeirantes.

 

It is the largest beach in the state of Rio de Janeiro, eighteen kilometers long.
